my favorite thing that happened in 1977 was when Apple Inc. was incorporated because without apple I don't know how I could carry 10,000 songs in my pocket.

My favourite thing that happened 1977 would be a tie between the Atari being released and Anita Bryant getting pied in the face by gay activists - and what d'ya know, those things happened on the same day.

KATRINA KOLLMANN   08/25/09 @ 6:14 p.m.

In May, 1977, Star Wars opened in theaters and became the highest grossing film of it's time. It's a tie between that and San Fransisco's election of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in the US.

WOLFGANG BERTHIER   08/25/09 @ 6:21 p.m.

My favorite thing that happened in 1977 is when San Francisco elected Harvey Milk as the City Supervisor, making him the first openly gay elected official of any large city in the U.S. That's awesome, and wish that would still happen today! Our president is black, the next will be gay! (And he'll wear some April 77 clothes)

CHRIS EMSLIE   08/25/09 @ 6:21 p.m.

Many people, especially Brits like myself, will forever think of 1977 as punk ground zero; the year that set one of the most vibrant and vicious movements into motion and saw a pletohra of new icons rise from the ashes of respectable youth culture. But while the likes of Johnny Rotten were spitting at their fans and shredding their clothes, my favourite event of '77 was happening elsewhere. Already a legend in his own right, David Bowie was refusing to hop aboard the band-wagon of dissatisfaction and fury, choosing instead to turn his music toward the idea of unity. Punk fed off the divisions in in its world and saw them as incentives for its destruction. My favourite thing of 1977 was "Heroes", because it may have been punk spirit that eventually tore down the wall, but it was Bowie who pulled us all out of the rubble.

While all these comments are well and good, and show eager despiration for the gift bag, there is one major event that happened in 1977 that seems to be over looked. 1977 was the year that King Kong, Star Wars, and Close Encounters of a Third Kind were all released, but more importantly the EPIC hockey flick Slap Shot was released featuring the illustrious Paul Newman (RIP). The movie was 100% man as it featured hockey, fighting, blood The Hanson Brothers, and whole crapload of Coors Original. Not only did the legend who is Paul Newman provide the world with an amazing performance, but he also gave us all a true portrayal of the glory that was the late seventies, because after that everything went to hell! Did I mention that it fatures more or less a one song soundtrack by Maxine Nightingale? moran.corey@gmail.com

The NYC Blackout of '77. Complete darkness covered the city for just one night and invoked a torrent of mobs and looters, like a tornado ripping the city apart. Thousands of stores were looted and thousands of fires started, leading to more than 3,000 arrests and $300 million in damages. The poor experienced sudden wealth while the wealthy were stripped bare of all merchandise. It's like heaven and hell all at once. I just love that mob mentality. Not like it's productive to society or righteous, but it's pretty amazing what mass groups of people can do when they're feelin' crazy. Whether good or bad, it's raw power. It makes hurricanes and earthquakes look like a box of kittens. damnedsamikx@hotmail.com
